If you’ve invested in dentures to replace your lost teeth, you’ve made a great decision. New materials and technologies allow dentures to look and feel more realistic than ever before. Although they’ll fit comfortably, they’ll feel foreign in your mouth for a while. As a result, talking clearly can be a little challenging at first. Here are a few tips to help you speak clearly and confidently in no time at all.

Bite and Swallow

Before you start speaking, bite and swallow to get your dentures into position. This will help prevent them from slipping while you’re chatting.

Practice Makes Perfect

You can practice talking by reading aloud or singing. You’ll get practice pronouncing commonly used words. You can even practice in front of a mirror to help build your confidence.

Speak at a Normal Volume

Although talking can feel a little awkward for a week or two, speak at a normal volume. The more you practice speaking, the less your words will sound slurred.

Practice Counting

Count from 60 to 90 to get more practice with difficult-to-pronounce sounds. In time, you won’t have a lisp when speaking.

Speak Slowly

If you talk too quickly, you can hear a clicking sound when you speak. Clicking occurs when you accidentally bring your teeth together with more pressure than you intended. Slowing down while you’re talking will prevent your dentures from clicking.

Use an Adhesive

Your dentures should rest comfortably on your gums, only relying on suction to stay in place. However, using an adhesive can give you more stability and confidence, but it isn’t something you want to rely on.

Maintain Your Dentures

You won’t have any issues speaking clearly within a month of getting your dentures. If your words become slurred over time or your denture is slipping, it’s time to visit your dentist.

Your mouth will change shape from bone loss, which means your dentures may not fit as well as they used to. If your dentures are slipping, they might need to be relined. Your dentist will make the necessary adjustments to restore a snug fit.

You can avoid slipping and irritation for good by stabilizing your dentures with dental implants. Your dentist can anchor your denture to your jawbone, creating unmatched support. You’ll never have to worry about your teeth moving around when you’re talking.
