Information?
Brushing and flossing are your first lines of defense against preventable oral health issues, like cavities and gum disease. However, the American Dental Association also recommends a dental checkup every 6 months. Regular appointments are important to preserve your natural smile through the power of prevention and early detection. As you get ready for your routine visit, here are 6 tips to make your checkup easier for both you and your dentist.
1. Brush and floss your teeth.
It isn’t always necessary to brush and floss before heading to your dentist, but it’s a good idea if you’ve recently had a big meal. Although your dentist has smelled their fair share of bad breath, food particles can make the cleaning process take longer. If you can’t get home to your toothbrush, rinse your mouth with water.
2. Reschedule your appointment if you are ill.
If you are feeling a bit under the weather, there isn’t any need to cancel your appointment because your dentist follows strict protocols to keep their office germ-free. However, if you are coughing or sneezing, it is best to reschedule. Be considerate when changing your appointment by contacting your dentist at least 24 hours in advance.
3. Skip the gym before your dental checkup.
Although your dentist might be used to bad breath, no one wants to smell body odor in a confined space. It is better to head to the gym after your appointment, but if you can’t adjust your schedule, at least change out of damp, sweaty clothes.
4. Get off of your cell phone.
Communication between a patient and a dentist is essential. Nothing is more frustrating than having a patient focused on their cell phone more than communicating with their dental team. Unless you are waiting for an important phone call, take a break from looking at your screen while you are in the dental chair.
5. Don’t wear lipstick.
Everyone wants to look their best, but your dentist may ask you to remove lipstick. It can transfer to dental instruments as they pass over your lips and get into your mouth. Not to mention, it can get spread all over your face.
6. Write down any questions or concerns.
Create a list of any concerns or questions so you don’t forget to address anything with your dentist. You will ensure nothing is overlooked and leave the office with the information you need to maintain your best smile.
